Understanding Skin Tightening
According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, non-surgical skin tightening allows cosmetic surgeons to "effectively tighten moderately lax or 'crepey' skin on the face, neck, and body" without the use of surgery. Most methods of non-surgical skin tightening work use targeted energy to heat deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. As a result, both skin tone and texture gradually improve.
Some skin tightening techniques also help smooth cellulite by affecting fibrous tissue. There are several FDA-cleared skin tightening treatments on the market today, each using a different mechanism to achieve the patient's desired results. As previously mentioned, our method of skin tightening uses J-Plasma by Renuvion.

How J-Plasma Skin Tightening Works
J-Plasma, also known as J-plasty or simply Renuvion, is a non-surgical procedure for skin tightening. Since it is a non-invasive procedure, J-Plasma tightens and refreshes the loose skin with a precision repair technique. The precision repair technique involves applying controlled heat to the targeted areas.
During the procedure, we create a small entry point into the skin by placing the device just under the targeted area. Once we have placed the device where it should be, we release pro helium gas and radiofrequency to create a precise plasma stream. This creates sufficient heat to tighten the skin while the excess helium gas cools down the treated area. This combination of energy causes the tissues under the skin to contract, which tightens the skin.
Benefits of J-Plasma Skin Tightening
The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery states that it is natural for collagen and elastin production to slow down as one ages. These two proteins are essential for keeping the skin plump, firm, and smooth. As such, slowed production results in areas of sagging skin on the face, neck, and body. Patients concerned with skin laxity may want to consider J-Plasma skin tightening for a non-surgical solution to halt this process temporarily. J-Plasma can tighten the skin in virtually any area of the body. However, common areas include:
- Belt region (abdomen and sides)
- Lower face and neck
With J-Plasma skin tightening, patients can achieve firmer, smoother, and more youthful skin with little to no downtime. This is arguably one of the biggest, most obvious benefits of J-Plasma skin tightening. Furthermore, mild to moderately loose skin can be tightened without any surgery or scarring. When performed by a qualified surgeon, there is little risk of adverse effects, and treatment can typically be performed in an hour or less.
Candidates for J-Plasma Skin Tightening
The ideal candidate for J-Plasma skin tightening is concerned with mild to moderate skin laxity but does not require the more dramatic lifting and skin removal that comes with invasive surgery. J-Plasma can also address freckles, skin discolorations, or moderate sun damage. Additionally, it can address moderate fine lines, minor acne scarring, and moderate to minimal signs of aging.
There are very few serious side effects associated with J-Plasma skin tightening, but some candidates may not be suitable for the procedure. These include those who are taking certain medications, have certain medical conditions, or are currently pregnant. Only a qualified cosmetic surgeon can determine whether J-Plasma skin tightening is right for a patient. We can discuss how to best address your needs and desires in a one-on-one consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I combine J-Plasma skin tightening with other procedures?
While J-Plasma skin tightening is often recommended as an alternative to face lift surgery, it can also be used to complement the procedure. When used in conjunction with a face lift, J-Plasma skin tightening can bring about even more dramatic results. It can also be used with other procedures, such as liposuction.
Can my entire face be treated by J-Plasma skin tightening?
Yes. Since the treatment is so precise, we can target specific facial areas and concerns. At the same time, we can treat the entire face, even including areas of delicate skin, such as the lips and around the eyes.
What is it like to recover from J-Plasma skin tightening?
Recovery from J-Plasma skin tightening is minor. It is normal to experience some redness and skin peeling for a couple of weeks after the procedure, and you may see redness for up to two months. Most patients take two weeks off work, and any pain and discomfort can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain killers.
How many J-Plasma skin tightening treatments will I need to achieve my desired results?
It depends on your goals and the starting condition of your skin. During your initial consultation, we can determine how many treatments are best for you.
Does J-Plasma skin tightening hurt?
Since the procedure is non-invasive, it is relatively pain-free as compared to a face lift surgery. Additionally, we prioritize your safety above all else. Therefore, we will do everything in our power to keep you comfortable throughout your procedure. We may also offer a local numbing cream to further reduce any potential discomfort.
What are the different types of J-Plasma skin tightening?
There are three types of J-Plasma skin tightening: Renuvion for the Face, Renuvion for the Body, and Renuvion for the Skin. Renuvion for the Face utilizes cold plasma energy on the underside of the skin to immediately tighten and rejuvenate the facial skin. In contrast, Renuvion for the Body utilizes subdermal cold plasma energy to instantly tighten and rejuvenate the bodily skin. Finally, Renuvion for the Skin uses cold plasma energy to reduce the signs of aging dramatically.
